Peter Haubrich’s job is to set up and maintain the technology systems that hospitals and other healthcare providers rely on to securely access and share patient data.
“Without people like me doing what I do, providers can’t get patient data and they can’t give the quality care that people need,” said Haubrich, who is an Interface Analyst for Optum, the umbrella company for United Healthcare.
Haubrich said his coursework in BFIT’s Health Information Technology bachelor’s degree program taught him key technical skills that he uses in his current role. Just as importantly, he learned how to work effectively within a team. “There were a lot of projects at BFIT where we had to work as a team and depend on other people,” he said. “It helps me now being able to work with people in different time zones, with different skill sets, and just adjusting to what needs to be done.”
Haubrich liked computers in high school, but didn’t know what he wanted to do for a college major or a career until a friend introduced him to BFIT. He immediately loved the college’s small size and strong sense of community. “The professors really get to know you on a personal level and an academic level, so they can help you along the way,” he said. “I also loved how you could talk to anybody in the administration. They make students feel really comfortable, whether you have an issue or just an idea to share.”
Haubrich enjoys working in the healthcare IT field because every day brings different challenges and “keeps him thinking and on his toes.” He said choosing BFIT turned out to be a great investment in his future. “It was very affordable and it was absolutely a good value in terms of what I was able to earn when I graduated,” he said.
