BFIT Engineering Student Takes 1st Place in MIT Hackathon

March 30, 2021

Congratulations to BFIT electrical engineering major Daylin Dominguez and his team for winning 1st place in the Sustainability category and in the IRobot Best Home Robot Category for the SpreadRo, in the MakeMIT 2021 international Hackathon contest.

SpeedRoDaylin and his international team worked in tandem to create “SpreadRo,” a rover that can seed your grass autonomously during the summer and can spread ice melt on your driveway during winter.

“I think Daylin’s achievement reflects upon his resourcefulness and ingenuity and upon the excellence of BFIT’s electrical engineering program,” said Lisa Shatz, BFIT Professor and Chair, Electrical Engineering Program.  “Our program encourages students to participate in professional contests and Daylin has worked with EE Professor Craig Christensen on a robotic mouse for the IEEE  micromouse competition. That experience, Dr. Christensen’s helpful suggestions, and the programming skills Daylin learned in our Embedded Systems course put Daylin in a good position to shine in the 2021 MakeMIT Competition.”

Daylin is a senior expected to graduate in December 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He credited his Hackathon win to all the support from BFIT faculty and staff, his family, and his faith. “I would like to adopt Newton’s quote,” Daylin said. “‘If I’ve seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.'”
