BPDA Vote Moves Nubian Square Project Forward
October 13, 2023
The Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) yesterday approved a package of public support—including a $4M recoverable grant from the City of Boston to jumpstart construction of the college’s new campus in Roxbury’s Nubian Square.
The college’s move to Nubian Square depends on the sale of its current campus at 41 Berkeley Street in Boston’s South End to developer Related Beal, which had been delayed due to a host of factors. The newly approved city support package includes a recoverable grant that the college will use to off-set financing costs for a bridge loan that is being acquired to start construction. Proceeds from the sale of 41 Berkeley Street will be used to pay off the bridge financing.
The new Franklin Cummings Tech campus will provide a 21st Century space for preparing students for in-demand local tech and trade jobs that await them while also accelerating the ascent of an exciting and prosperous era for Nubian Square.
“Cementing public support for the college via Mayor Michelle Wu and her Administration is a milestone to be celebrated,” said Franklin Cummings Tech President and CEO Aisha Francis. “We’re excited to be one step closer to opening our anchor institution in Nubian Square. We are deeply grateful to the City of Boston for their role in helping to advance this project, and invite private supporters to follow their lead in shoring up workforce development through robust investment.”
