The event featured a keynote speech by Michael Meyer, author of Benjamin Franklin’s Last Bet, who told the graduates they were an integral part of Franklin’s favorite invention: the bequest in his will leaving a large sum to be used for the benefit of Boston’s tradespeople, which ultimately resulted in the creation in 1908 of the technical and trades college now known as Franklin Cummings Tech.
“I think it’s safe to say that if Franklin were to return here for a visit, he would absolutely love this college and the knowledge and skills that are taught here,” said Meyer, who was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the college. “He’d also be thrilled to see that, more than two centuries after his death, his bet on young, skilled workers is still paying out here in Boston and you’re all the winners of that wager. And now you get to pay those winnings forward….You are the present. You’re ready. Our communities and our country need you. We can’t wait to see what you’re going to accomplish.”
The student Commencement speaker was Joseph Salami, who talked about his academic journey as a transfer student who explored several majors before finding a field he is passionate about: Computer Information Technology – Network and Systems Support. “The community here has been one of the most supportive I have ever witnessed,” he said. “Switching into [CIT Networking] was one the best decisions I’ve made in my educational journey thus far. This program gave me a well-rounded, solid foundation and I’m grateful for that.”
Dean of Students Jackie Cornog presented the college’s two most prestigious student awards: the Carnegie Award and the Franklin Award. The Carnegie Award, which is given to the student who demonstrated leadership, scholarship, and unselfish dedication to the college community, was awarded to Roberto Rivera, who earned an Automotive Technology associate degree. The Franklin Award, which is given to the student who has earned the highest overall grade point average at the college, was awarded to Camille Marie Dubois, who earned an Opticianry associate degree.
A special award was presented to Sally Heckel, Director of Learning, who is retiring this month after 32 years of service to the college as a teacher, mentor, and herald for Commencement. Also honored was Kolawole Omo, ’20AS/’22BS, who served as Chief Marshal for the ceremony.
Dr. Aisha Francis, college President and CEO, sent the graduates off with this charge: “Remember, you are essential in your chosen profession and your community. Know you will always be learning and discovering new things, so life learning is critical. And commit to using your skills to improve the lives of others and to help make a better world.”
